Cette voyante, que Breton consulte \u00e0 plusieurs reprises, aborde une expression fig\u00e9e et semble fixer le spectateur qui ne peut que ressentir un malaise face \u00e0 cette troublante photographie. Le fait qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse d\u2019une voyante accentue d\u2019autant plus cette impression\u00a0: elle est celle qui peut lire dans l\u2019avenir (du spectateur\u00a0?) \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un simple regard. Ce mysticisme se d\u00e9gage aussi de la photographie de Blanche Derval (p.\u00a040), la com\u00e9dienne qui joue dans la pi\u00e8ce Les D\u00e9traqu\u00e9es \u00e0 laquelle Breton va assister. La p\u00e2leur de son visage, l\u2019aspect fig\u00e9 de son expression conf\u00e8re une sorte de myst\u00e8re \u00e0 ce portrait. Les femmes qui apparaissent avant Nadja pr\u00e9parent en fait son arriv\u00e9e. Tout porte donc \u00e0 croire que Breton diss\u00e9mine des indices de cette entr\u00e9e en sc\u00e8ne \u00e0 travers ces photographies. Mais les portraits ont aussi une autre fonction\u00a0: ils peuvent, en effet, se lire comme des index qui accompagnent le texte. C\u2019est le cas de la photographie du professeur Claude (p.\u00a0114). Le m\u00e9decin y appara\u00eet dans une posture classique, les bras crois\u00e9s, lunettes sur le nez.
